What is your safety pledge?

Seeing our job sites and talking to our crews, I've come to see safety as more than mindfulness on a job/task. It's the willingness to speak up and the mindset that goes into planning every day. You cannot rely on tools and gear alone and be safe. The human factor plays the largest role and, the more we each engage ourselves with safety, the fewer accidents we have.

How has IFE impacted my life?

I've really reflected on the things I do every day and noticed that there are many areas I could plan to be more safe. I love to ski and hike, each activities that present hazards that I've always over-prepared for... but I never gave a second thought to the drive to the resort or trailhead. That drive was, statistically speaking, the most dangerous part of the day! Learning to put the cell phone away, set the cruise control and minimize distractions not only helps me be a better driver, but it enables me to be alert for the people around me who aren't. Nothing would ruin a great day out in the mountains like a car accident - or being injured in one.
