What is your safety pledge?
In 2011, my children lost their mom in a car accident. Experiencing the pain of her loss and watching my sons grow up without her is truly heartbreaking. This is something I carry with me, each day I step on a job because safety means getting home to my family uninjured at the end of every day. My mission is to try to not only enforce our safety rules and procedures, but to affect the culture of the site. I want safety to be a real, tangible thing to our employees – not just words.
How has IFE impacted my life?
IFE has impacted my life, because safety has become more than a process, it has become a culture. It has showed me how I can influence the mindset of those around me. IFE is about education and training, not punishment for behavior. You can tell an employee that what he is doing is wrong, but through IFE, you educate them as to why it is unsafe – you see it click with the guys on sites, whereas you may not always get workers to understand the meaning or spirit of a set safety rule or procedure.
